#107 Chatfield Shelter to Long Neck Lair Hostel to Crawfish Trail Campsite - Day 46: ATMM 541.1 – ATMM 552.3
Today’s epiphany encouraged a leap in my pack-weight-dropping evolution.
The walk from the shelter to the hostel is interesting. We pass an old school building and community that was active in the mid-eighteen-hundreds. Uncle Lody and I didn’t see the sign on the school building inviting us in. Princess later tells us that there was a chalkboard for hikers to sign their name on and a box with trails snacks in it. I missed out on the pop tarts!!
We crossed many farms. Many of the owners mowed the trail for us. It’s nice walking on a fresh cut trail with tall grass about three feet on either side.
The high voltage buzzing from the power line, of which I have to walk through to remain on the trail, makes me wonder if it was safe to pass. Since I don’t see a pile of electrified hikers beneath it, I judge it to be safe enough.
Stepping of the trail onto the road (VA 683/HWY 11) is a massive change of pace from the quiet trail. Suddenly there are eighteen wheelers buzzing past me, a large gas station, a couple of restaurants, and a nearby exit for I81 which is also in view. So much for wilderness tranquility.
